(South Lake Tahoe, CA) - From physicians providing orthopedic care at the Winter Games, to personalized training of Olympic athletes, Barton Health has a long-standing tradition of helping Team U.S.A. competitors go for the gold.
This history began in the 1960s, after the Olympics at Squaw Valley, when Dr. Paul Fry moved his family to South Lake Tahoe and established the Tahoe Fracture and Orthopedic Clinic. During this time, Dr. Fry became an orthopedic physician for the Barton Hospital. With the collaboration of other physicians in the field, the first formal medical care for the U.S. Ski Team was created. Barton physicians continue to provide medical coverage for the U.S. Ski Team.
This year, father and son Barton Health orthopedic physicians Dr. Terrence Orr and Dr. Jeffrey A. Orr are providing care in Garmish, Germany as the U.S. Men's Ski Team competes in the World Cup - some of the final races before heading to Pyeong Chang to compete in the 2018 Winter Games. Head team physician for the men's U.S. Alpine Ski Team from 1999 - 2014, Dr. Terrence Orr is a seasoned veteran of Olympic athlete medical care.
Back in South Lake Tahoe, Barton certified training coaches have been helping year-round with aspiring Olympians like local freeride skier Kyle Smaine to be at peak performance. In the Barton Performance by ALTIS training center, athletes are lead through personalized training protocols, many participating in Barton's programs that bridge post-surgery rehabilitation with being ready to compete on the world stage.
The new Barton Center for Orthopedics & Wellness, opening in spring of 2018, will be a U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team Certified Center of Excellence and the training grounds for local athletes working to reach their own personal best.
