Black Bear Yearlings Sent into Big World by Mothers

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - Meet Rudy... a typical 15 month-old Tahoe black bear who was just dispersed from his Mom, because that's what all Mother Bears do when their yearlings are this age.

It's that time of year again and the BEAR League's phones are ringing continuously with calls from concerned residents and visitors, "There is a young bear who looks kinda scraggly and a bit too small to be on his own, can you come and get him and help him?" All across North American and everywhere in Bear Country this is happening right now.

Black Bear yearlings are sent out into the big world by their Mothers.

They are not too terribly smart yet, they miss their Moms, they don't have credit cards or cell phones, they hope to find someone who will help them out with some easy food, they have little fear of people, they are losing their baby fur and are kinda skinny and they have never been alone before.

Now is when we humans can really jump in and help them out by letting them know that we are NOT their new friends, we are NOT going to feed them, we are NOT going to allow them to take up residence under our porch, we are NOT going to talk sweetly to them....

INSTEAD we are going to help make big strong grown-up bears out of them by letting them know the rules: They need to forage for their own food (plenty of natural food for them right now) and they need to stay away from people because we are mean and scary and we yell at them.

It takes a village to finish raising a bear cub, and the Mama Bears are counting on us to do our part.
Please don't hesitate to call the BEAR League with questions or concerns ...
we are here to help you---and the bears, too.
