Wrought Iron Fencing Alterations Saves Deer

$

<Dave Cook, Sierra Wildlife Rescue>

This is a request to those of you who have wrought iron fencing that you consider making adjustments to it so that it’s less harmful to deer.

I get plenty of calls every year about deer (usually fawns or yearlings) that have gotten stuck trying to squeeze through such fencing when they’re too young/small to jump over the top. Their shoulders are narrower than their hips and they get stuck halfway through. Since they don’t understand reverse, they keep plunging forward trying to get through and can cause themselves tremendous, sometimes fatal, injuries.

I got the sixth call in a week & a half last night, and it was an adult doe (somewhat unusual age for such a situation), and she died before I could free her. I was able to successfully free three of those six deer but three of them died, either onsite or later.

Ways to prevent a deer from even trying to squeeze through include installing hardware cloth or snake proofing material up a couple of feet from ground level. Another approach is to have additional bars installed in between the original bars so that the gap is then too narrow for deer to even try getting through.

I hope all of you with wrought iron fencing will consider making such adjustments and you can feel free to call me to discuss other solutions. And of course call me right away if one does get stuck at your place!

Thanks...
Dave Cook

Civil Air Patrol turns good kids into great adults

<Steve Anderly‎>

Does your kid need something to do other than watch TV or play video games?

Mine did and joined Civil Air Patrol. It changed his life.

I highly recommend it. Squadron 85 has a history of success. Among their recent cadets are three attending military academies, a graduate of the Naval Academy, one current student and three graduates of AFROTC at Sacramento State, a graduate of ROTC at Montana State, several currently enlisted in all branches of the military, university students and graduates, law enforcement officers, fire fighters, and corporate executives.

This program turns good kids into great adults. I wouldn’t recommend it for your son or daughter if it didn’t.

Seatbelt Violation Leads to DUI Arrest

<CHP – Placerville>

We don’t just respond to DUI collisions, we do our best to prevent them from occurring...

One of our officers was working on Pleasant Valley Rd in downtown Diamond Springs this afternoon in response to traffic complaints and spotted this driver not wearing a seatbelt traveling the opposite way. (About half of our fatalities this year haven’t been wearing belts). The officer turned around and also noticed some issues with their driving.

Once the stop was made the officer saw indicators that the driver had been consuming alcohol prior to driving. A few field sobriety tests later and the driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI and taken to the El Dorado County Jail.

We make DUI arrests frequently, you just don’t always hear about it. Often it is someone who thought they could make it to their destination despite the way they were feeling. Unfortunately as we have seen, many don’t make it and end up victimizing innocent people.

Have a plan in place for your safe travels before you have your first drink.

<Dina Gentry>

Attention high school students who are interested in making a difference in our community:

The El Dorado County Youth Commission is now accepting applications for the 2019-2020 school year.  In a continued effort to positively enhance our community and empower our local youth, the County Board of Supervisors (BOS) partners with the County Office of Education (EDCOE) to appoint students as Youth Commissioners. Commissioners gather and express the opinions, ideas, and visions of our county’s youth, while gaining valuable leadership skills and knowledge about our county and local government.

To apply, students must be enrolled in grades 9-12, reside in El Dorado County, and be least 13 years old. Applications are available at most high school counseling offices, as well as online at: charter.edcoe.org/resources/edc-youth-commission, and edcgov.us/Government/BOS.

Completed applications must be submitted via email by 11:59 pm on Wednesday, September 11, 2019.

Students who have taken advantage of this opportunity in the past report that the skills they learned as Youth Commissioners help them in ways they didn’t expect. From interviewing for jobs, applying for scholarships, and feeling confident in challenging college classes, students praise the impact Youth Commission has made in their lives.

For more information please contact the El Dorado County Youth Commission Advisor, Amy Pooley, at apooley@edcoe.org.

DAY TRIP ON THE RUBICON TRAIL

$

<Reid Nordin. Img - Polaris RZR XP Turbo S Velocity on the Rubicon Trail>

WITH THE POLARIS RZR XP TURBO S VELOCITY

It doesn’t take much convincing for me to go drive my SXS so when I was asked to come along on a Day Trip to the Rubicon I immediately said yes. Once the commitment was made I started to work out the logistics. For me a one day Rubicon trip turns out to be 3 days as it is an 8 hour drive from So Cal to get there but that still doesn’t damper my enthusiasm to journey to this iconic trail. I planned the trip, prepped my Polaris RZR XP Turbo S Velocity (cleaned it) and packed what necessities I thought I might need.

I actually worked part of the day on day one and then traveled to Shingle Springs where Jon and Teresa were gracious enough to let me crash at their pad prior to making the short AM drive to the Loon Lake trail head on day two. Let me step back a little and let you know a little about my experience with the Rubicon since this is not my first rodeo.

In 1977 I was a passenger with my dad in our 1952 Flat Fender Jeep but it wasn’t until the mid-2000’s before I was able to bring my own toy on the trail. My first driving experience on the Rubicon was in a SXS and we camped at Buck Island Lake and drove in and out the same way. It is logistically difficult in a UTV to drive in one trail head and out the other side unless you have someone meet you with your tow rig since you can’t drive your UTV on the street in California. To drive from one trail head to the other side via the highway is also a fairly long journey as there is no straight route.

I did the complete trail in my Jeep with a group of friend’s and we camped at Buck Island Lake which is in between Old Sluice and Big Sluice. This trip would be luxury camping as I towed my little 4×4 adventure trailer with an RTT along. Towing a trailer on the Rubicon takes some patience, good line selection and a good tow rig. It was a great experience but not sure I would recommend it to just anyone. It was a bucket list thing, so check that box off!

Camping on the Rubicon takes preparation of not only your vehicle but of the supplies you need since you need to be self-sufficient. All these extra supplies add weight, hurt visibly and can also reduce the ability to bring or complicate bringing friends in your rig. The easiest way to see the Rubicon is via these little day trips. You need to pack less, the logistics are easier and if you are traveling via UTV you can cover much more ground comfortably then you can in a Jeep or other 4X4.

The trail itself had changed over the years by weather, big tires, big horsepower and most recently by government agencies “restoring” the trail and eliminating some of the optional lines. None of these changes however make the trail easier, it is just a little different which can be refreshing if you have not done it in a while.

Rubicon Trail

Buck Island on the Rubicon Trail

This trip was organized with just 3 UTV’s and all were fully capable to tackle this. We had a new Can-Am Maverick X3 X RC RR, a KOH built RZR XP Turbo S and my 2019 RZR XP Turbo S Velocity. We had capable vehicles, experienced drivers and a goal to get in and out in one day. We started the journey at the Loon Lake Trail head at about 9:30 AM. Our pace was relatively easy and we did take breaks for pictures, snacks, lunch at Rubicon Springs and general BS sessions. The end of the trip would be back at Loon Lake but the goal was to get to the top of Cadillac hill overlook and back before the sun set. The summer days are long so daylight was on our side.

There are several named obstacles along the way which include, Soup Bowl, Little Sluice, Old Sluice, Big Sluice and Cadillac hill. You can bypass some of the harder sections of each of these except Cadillac which is more one-line then the others. Rubicon Springs is at the bottom of Big Sluice at one end and Cadillac Hill is at the other end of a canyon floor. There are plenty of places to stop and play in the water or have lunch at the Springs grassy area or at one of the man-made structures by the caretakers cabin. You can make any of the trail obstacles as difficult as you want by line selection and as with any rock trail, tire placement can make or break cleaning the section or having to be winched. Turning around and running any of these in the opposite direction will make it a whole new trail.

So, back to preparation for a minute. I have done this trail in a virtually stock Teryx with 28” tires so depending on your SXS of choice you may be more or less challenged then others in your group. Speaking of groups I do not recommend going alone as even the smallest stuck or trail fix could spell disaster for someone alone on the trail.

Polaris RZR XP Turbo S Velocity

Polaris RZR XP Turbo S Velocity

To make my Polaris RZR XP Turbo S Velocity adventure machine fully capable I use the following products to ensure, durability, safety, comfort and performance:

  • Walker Evans Racing 15-inch Legend 2 Beadlocks
  • Walker Evans Racing performance tuned stock Velocity shocks
  • Walker Evans Racing Walker Links
  • Factory UTV Skids
  • Factor 55llc Closed loop Winch accessories
  • Cagewrx Cage
  • Holz Racing Products full Doors & seat mounts
  • BFG 32×15 KR2 tires
  • XTC Turn signal kit
  • MasterCraft Safety 2” 5pt Safety Harness
  • MasterCraft Safety Genesys Hard shell seat.
  • Rugged Radio / Intercom
  • Rugged Radio Fresh Air
  • Assault Industries Rear view Mirror
  • Polaris Accessory 4K winch and mount
  • Polaris High clearance radius rods
  • Proline Wraps

Of all the SXS’s I have driven on this trail I think I found my newest favorite!

When planning for your trip, remember the necessities to get you home safely and pack out what you pack in and if you see trash always do your part by picking it up. If you need to winch there are usually plenty of natural anchors available but if you have to use a tree please use a tree strap as you will see the scars left from those before you that did not follow this guideline.

Polaris RZR XP Turbo S Velocity

Polaris RZR XP Turbo S Velocity on the Rubicon Trail

The Rubicon Trail changes often and depending on what time of the season you go, traffic and rock movement, some obstacles will be difficult one day and easy the next. So no matter when you go, how many times you have been before or who you go with, expect a challenge and a good time with memories being made at every rock.

Locally Brewed "Hard Cider Trail" is now Open

<Apple Hill Growers>

This weekend Apple Hill Growers are celebrating locally brewed hard cider with the official opening of the Hard Cider Trail. The Apple Hill Growers have been producing hard cider for generations and now many farms offer unique brews that showcase the traditions of the farming families in the community.

September 15

Six Apple Hill Grower Farms celebrate the opening of the Apple Hill Hard Cider Trail.  Look for special offers and activities/events at the participating farms on opening day! Be sure to visit Delfino Farms, High Hill Ranch, North Canyon Cider Co., Rainbow Orchards, Smokey Ridge Ranch and Wofford Acres.

Here’s a taste of what’s being offered along the trail:

Delfino Farms

The Delfino family’s Henrietta Stich hard cider is a tribute to Joan Delfino’s mother, Henrietta Stich. Henrietta raised her three children (Joan being the middle child) to love life, family and farming. Now, third generation Delfinos are carrying on those same traditions at Delfino Farms. Their Vintage Cider is a blend of Black and Granny Smith apples and the brand-new blackberry version was released this summer. The ciders pair perfectly with Joan Delfino’s famous Walkin’ Pie and are available in the family’s farm stand.

High Hill Ranch

This Apple Hill favorite is known for its apple pies and doughnuts but the hard apple cider is worth stopping for on its own. The High Hand cider is crisp and tart with flavors of green apple. High Hill also produces several varieties of apple beer and cider champagne.

North Canyon Cider Co.

The Barsotti Family Juice Company has been making freshly pressed apple cider for nearly 40 years at the family-owned, solar-powered cider mill. They are currently producing four varieties: Original Dry, American Sweet, Ginger Pineapple and Cold Brewed with Hops. Visitors can enjoy them all at the cider house.

Rainbow Orchards

Rainbow Orchards might be best known for its mouth-watering apple cider doughnuts but the fresh-pressed apple cider is a great reason to stick around the ranch a little longer. Visitors can enjoy the ciders along with delicious baked goods showcasing the area’s best produce.

Smokey Ridge Farm

The laid back farm stand at Smokey Ridge Farm is the ideal place to soak in the mountain air and enjoy hard apple cider from apples grown on the farm on weekends from now through December. Smokey Ridge also produces several traditional wine varietals including foothill favorites like syrah, sangiovese and grenache.

Wofford Acres Vineyards

Wofford Acres Vineyards may be best known for its spectacular view of the American River Canyon but the South Fork Apple Cider is not to be missed. As the family says, “Come for the wine and stay for the view.” The same holds true for this brew made from Arkansas Black, Fuji, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith and Pippin apples.

South Lake Tahoe applauds passage of Senate Bill 5

<City of SLT>

South Lake Tahoe, CA- Today, South Lake Tahoe thanked members of the Legislature for passing Senate Bill 5 (Beall, McGuire, Portantino), a bill that establishes a state partnership with cities and counties to provide ongoing, sustainable funding to subsidize affordable housing in South Lake Tahoe and communities throughout the state. South Lake Tahoe urged Governor Newsom to sign this important legislation that will go a long way in helping cities address their affordable housing and homeless crises.

“SB 5 is the only piece of legislation this year that will directly result in affordable housing being built right away,” said City Manager Frank Rush. “We’re struggling to build the housing we need in South Lake Tahoe to help lower-income families and those facing homelessness. SB 5 will provide us needed resources to house those most in need.”

SB 5 establishes a new, state-backed financing program that provides cities and counties resources to subsidize affordable housing, invest in infrastructure needed to support housing, and invest in housing near job centers. SB 5 commits $200 million in funding annually to cities and counties beginning in 2020, eventually capping at $2 billion annually.

When the state abolished redevelopment in 2011, it wiped out the only source of ongoing funding available to local governments to build affordable housing and supporting infrastructure.

More and more families have been priced out and the homeless population has exploded. Today, more than 2.2 million extremely low-income and very low-income renter households are competing for only 664,000 affordable rental homes. That leaves more than 1.5 million of California’s lowest-income families without access to housing, forcing many into homelessness.

“The state’s housing and homelessness crisis is impacting every community throughout the state and is an issue of statewide importance,” said Rush. “SB 5 brings the state in on a long-term basis as partners with local governments to build the housing we need. We urge Governor Newsom to sign this critical legislation.”

SB 5 contains strong accountability provisions. The legislation creates a statewide oversight body to approve or reject all projects proposed by local governments. Additionally, cities and counties must submit annual reports to the Legislature. SB 5 creates an annual cap on funds available, and the Legislature can suspend funding for new plans during fiscal downturns.  Lastly, SB 5 provides state resources to ensure funding for schools and community colleges are not impacted.

SB 5 is supported by a broad coalition of cities, counties, business, labor, local governments, housing advocates, and community leaders.

<South Lake Tahoe Police Department>

South Lake Tahoe, CA- City Council and the public looked on as “Rocky,” a new police K9, was sworn in at the City Council meeting on August 20th. K9 Rocky and his handler, Officer Cory Wilson, completed three months of training and recently became a California POST certified K9 team.

“The K9’s are an invaluable tool for the police department and our community,” said Police Chief Brian Uhler, “The save officers time, give early warnings if situations get dangerous, and most importantly they save lives.”

Rocky was made possible thanks to a generous $50,000 donation from Lisa Maloff to the South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association.

Mrs. Maloff got to meet K9 Rocky and Officer Wilson on August 13 when they visited her at her home.

K9 Rocky and Officer Wilson are now on patrol at the Police Department. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department is grateful to Mrs. Maloff for her support and assistance in getting this K9 team in service and helping make South Lake Tahoe a safer place.
